Mammals -
Early Winter
Foxes
Foxes are becoming more urban, London is full
of them and Ely and surrounding villages are also very
attractive to this russet coated scavenger. A late night
drive around the estates may produce a sighting or an early
morning stroll around our suggested winter ramble through
the towns greener spots. If you are woken during the night
by some inhuman squeeling and screeching outside your
window it may well be the local foxes fighting over food or
territory

Spots
After the take-aways shut
along Market Street you may catch a glimpse of a Fox
cautiously searching for some scraps of kebab meat, chicken
wing, burger or Balti (TL 542 804 or N+52 24' 0" E+0 15'

Pipistrelle
Bats
Get out at the end of a sunny day close to
dusk and you may see these bats feeding on any insects
temporarily drawn out of hibernation by the warmth. October
and early November provide a better chance of catching bats
in flight

Roe
Deer
You'd have to be very lucky to find one of these lovely
deer but they aren't uncommon in the wilder parts of Ely10.
You may see them in the overgrown setaside by the A10 or
out on a quiet drove stood stock still nose sniffing the
air before bounding off. Look on the
sightings page to
see where roe deer have been seen recently
