Insects - Late
Winter
Droneflies
Insects are hard to find in the early part of the year. A
sunny day may bring out droneflies to bask, they look a
little like bees
Top Spots
Look for sunny sheltered corners in gardens or woods,
especially where there may be decaying organic material
close by where they may have just hatched from larvae
Woodlice
Checking under rocks paving slabs or logs should reveal
Woodlice, Beetle larvae and other ground dwelling insects.
Make sure you don’t disturb them too much when searching
and always replace the log, rock or slab exactly as you
found it

Spots
Look under suitable looking rocks, paving slabs, or logs
under trees or heavy vegetation. Remember to put the rock,
paving slab or log back as it was, as you've just taken the
roof off someone's home
Bumblebees
By February the first bumblebees may sleepily take to the
wing. This is a sure sign that spring is on it’s way

Spots
Like Droneflies, bumblebees can be seen in warm corners of
garden, sheds, or even conservatories
