Plants - Late
Winter
Snowdrops
By the end of January the green shoots of our
earliest flowering plants have started to bust forth with
their beautiful white flower heads. It’s OK to pick the
variegated ones you may find in the garden but leave the
wild growing ones to grow and spread beneath the bare
boughs of their common woodland habitat

Farthing Drove between Shippea Hill Station railway station

Bluebells
By February the clumps of Bluebell leaves can be found in
woodlands. Make a note of where you find them so that you
can return in May and see the pastel blue flowerheads
glimmering in the spring sunshine

Alder
Alder catkins appear during the late winter and carry
pollen. They droop and sway in the wind, viewed up close
they are intricate and beautiful making a great subject for
close up photography or framing a wintery composition
